Look at this picture; let’s call him Hugh. It’s clip art of a man in a wool hat and pipe.
At first glance, this picture of Hugh might seem simple. But the man smoking the pipe isn’t just any guy in old-fashioned clothes. Some people may not know that back in the 1500s, Queen Elizabeth made a law saying that working class men had to wear these flat wool hats to help the wool trade between Ireland and England (the rich and nobles didn’t have to wear them!). It wasn’t until the 1900s that rich people started wearing these hats for golfing and driving. Hugh’s expression and the way he’s holding his hat could show feelings like regret, secrecy, or shyness. Also, the picture mostly uses colors like green and brown.
Plus, most people know Hugh as clip art. Clip art is a kind of picture that lots of people can get for free with their writing programs. It looks like a cartoon and is very common—almost everyone has seen this Hugh picture before. This makes it seem not very special or fancy.
Would Hugh be a good picture to use if you want to tell people about a brand, product, or service? Maybe, if you have a shop that sells pipes and tobacco, and you want to give a funny old-timey British feeling. Also, if your brand already uses green and brown colors, and you don’t mind that other shops might use the same picture. But probably, Hugh wouldn’t really give your shop a special meaning because he wasn’t made just for your business.
