In any industry, a large project often means all company hands on deck. Months of thought, planning, and effort are placed into these undertakings. At Hayman Studio, a small-team approach to large-scale projects means we give each client personalized attention and dedication to their needs.
This year, we showcased the full benefits of our intimate studio with OSS Health’s 2018 Annual Report. The report featured OSS Health’s year of amazing growth in its facilities, its capabilities, its staff, its local giving, and its patient experience. That growth inspired the organization to make the 2018 Annual Report stand out.
OSS Health Marketing Director Angie Hartman chose our creative team to design, write, and create all the assets for the regional health center’s annual report because she understands the value of the one-on-one connection our small team brings.
“I think that because Hayman Studio understood what we really wanted and our concept…they brought to us really good ideas and [knew] how to make it happen,” said Angie.
The OSS Health 2018 Annual Report was delivered to the client and released in April 2019, after approximately 5 months of designing and editing. Hayman Studio tackled each aspect of this momentous undertaking, and the product was met with rave reviews from OSS Health staff and clients.
“This is a really time intensive project, but at the same time it’s a really important project. The annual report can be used in a lot of different ways and for the purpose of reflecting back. For us, it tells our story,” says Angie Hartman. “I think that when you have someone from the outside looking in that has an expertise in [large projects], it can bring details to your attention that you wouldn’t have thought of for the annual report. They can kind of see the forest through the trees.”
What set the report APART?
While each phase of production was helmed by an individual creative professional, overall organization was key in bringing each piece of this important puzzle together.
Project Management
Led by Melissa Beaverson
To kick off the project, our creative team sat down with Angie and laid out a comprehensive plan that detailed a timeline of each project phase and the assets we’d create and compile for each page of the report.
Account Services Director Melissa Beaverson was the official liaison between OSS Health and Hayman Studio, personally answering all questions and concerns. She had a hand in every aspect of the report, organized the pieces of the project, kept everyone on schedule, made sure all project expectations were clear, logistics flawlessly organized.
Most important to our team, Melissa made sure that each phase of production featured the personal touch that made Hayman Studio ideal for OSS Health’s project.
Photography
Led by Ryan Hayman
Photography is the stand-out element of the OSS Health 2018 Annual Report. Every page of the report features active photography of OSS Health’s doctors and staff, often engaged in their real work in offices, the orthopaedic hospital and the surgical center.
“For the first time in an annual report, viewers see doctors at work in a surgical setting,” said lead photographer, Ryan Hayman, speaking of this approach to the report.
To capture these authentically OSS Health photos in a working environment, Ryan used every minute of the shoot effectively with our standard quality over quantity approach. Our cameras were tethered to a laptop on site so Ryan could bring up the images full screen, ensure quality, check images in a layout, and make sure we captured exactly what our client.
OSS Health physicians were especially pleased with the personal touch original, on-site photography added to the report. They were hugely in favor of seeing actual patients, doctors, and treatment facilities. The images spoke to the way OSS Health creates a welcoming atmosphere for patients.
Copy
Led by Lauren Hayman
Perhaps one of the most challenging elements of the report came in the form of copy. The copy had to showcase OSS Health’s tangible and intangible growth, speak to a general audience, and recruit medical professionals.
Early in the process, copywriter Lauren Hayman and Melissa worked directly with Angie to clearly identify the key points of OSS Health’s business and understand its service areas. Extensive collaboration followed. With a mix of interviews and research Lauren crafted the copy.
Information organization is key for a project of this magnitude. Content comes from a number of sources and trickles in piece by piece. Lauren kept information organized and wrote copy in which growth stood out.
Design
Led by Elia Filippone
Once photography and copy were finalized, the assets were formatted and placed into an engaging and effective layout. While Angie remained involved in each step of the design process, we were given a significant amount of freedom to create an innovative report. Creative Director Elia Filippone took a new, unique direction with report layout and organization: The sleek, textured, photographic cover, with a die cut that showcases OSS Health’s logo, gives a glimpse of the OSS Health Hospital photographic spread on inside cover.
Rather than a standard vertical publication size, the report is comprised of horizontal 7.25 by 10.5 inch pages, thus allowing it to stand out among other reports of its kind. An interactive timeline is the report’s most innovative element: It folds out from the booklet to highlight OSS Health’s accomplishments and reveal exciting future events.
“It is important to have the reader actually pick it up, feel the pages, and interact with it,” says Elia.
Animation
Led by Alex Glass
Hayman Studio Videographer Alex Glass used design assets created for the printed report to bring digital life to the already interactive timeline with custom animations. The digital timeline plays a part in everyday operations at OSS Health facilities playing on screen in facility lobbies.
What does our client have to say?
The OSS Health 2018 Annual Report is the culmination of a trusted relationship between the client and a small, hands-on studio located within the same community. The way we work allowed essential communication to remain quick and efficient. And, Angie adds, we brought a new outlook to what had proven to be an incredibly crucial piece of the OSS Health mission.
“We knew the general concept [of the report], but I think Hayman helped us define that. They helped tell the story based upon the input we gave at the beginning of the project,” says Angie. “Having someone from the outside looking in, sometimes they can help us see the bigger picture.”
This bigger picture included patient testimonials and glimpses into OSS facilities, including operating rooms that had not been featured in the past. According to Angie, these new elements helped to communicate the idea of overall growth and succeeded in speaking to multiple audiences.
“I got really good feedback from different people who use it for physician recruiting and company-to-company interactions,” says Angie.
Of Hayman Studio, Angie says, “Always very responsive; I never have to worry about the size of the studio or the organization. With all of the planning and setting the plan in motion, I think using a smaller agency gives you increased communication, which is good.”
